Refinishing a Conference Table is a Great Investment

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

That old conference table has seen, and heard, a lot.

A furniture restorer might be able to actually tell a tale about the table itself, though, based on its bumps and scrapes and scratches. Even more, he can tell you about the table’s makeup, how it was built, what woods were used, where it was made, its approximate age, and whether or not it would be worth refinishing.

Sometimes a table cannot be saved, even though to the inexperienced eye it looks like a quick hit of sandpaper and a squirt of polyurethane would take care of it. Pros will tell you that often, the most innocent-looking piece can turn into a nightmare project, costing them far more hours and aggravation than they had anticipated.

Refinishing, a Wise Choice

As the conference table is likely the most costly of all furniture in your office, looking into refinishing it is a wise move. There are all sorts of conference tables, from solid wood to live edge and even veneer. Solid wood and live edge trees are extremely heavy and can be a challenge to move.

Veneer is much lighter by comparison, making it easier to maneuver, but due to the thin layer of wood veneer, a very detailed, careful repair that should only be entrusted to a skilled craftsman. One wrong move could put a hole in it and become a costly disaster.

Refinishing conference tables not only brings beauty back to a worn out but solid piece of furniture, it can also be done in such a way to change the color of the piece to match a new color scheme, similar to the job we completed for Fusion Systems about 18 months ago. The biggest challenge in that project was moving the heavy conference table out of their office and into our facility.

Veneer refinishing can be a labor-intensive job, thanks to the need for hand stripping. This is generally due to the material underneath the veneer being incompatible with the dipping system that can easily be used on solid hardwood furniture. Getting that material, often medium density fiberboard (MDF), wet by dipping would result in a sponge-like mass.

Not only can Wehrli Furniture bring life back to a veneer conference table, they have plenty of experience building new, custom furniture to match the existing. One of those projects, for Cantara Financial, had 11 pieces refinished and four new to match the newly refinished pieces.
