Custom Curved Desk
We’re always looking for ways to bring ingenuity, functionality, and beauty to every project we collaborate on, especially custom design. In fact, custom design pieces are very on trend right now. They bring a high level of sophistication to any home, business, or restaurant and are a great way to show off your personal style. We’ve been on a roll with some amazing clients who have visions and dreams for a better furniture solution than they can find in big box stores and this custom curved desk is no exception.
Curved Desk Dimensions
We’ve designed this piece and are in the process of creating it right now. As it stands, the desk will be 72 inches wide and 29 inches tall. The two side lengths will be unique in that the left side will be 24 inches and the right will be 42 inches. The curved style of this desk will be in the front’s curved outward edge.
The desk will look like solid wood but will actually be made with high-pressure laminate. The top, with a 3 cm edge, will be a very dark black-brown color high-pressure laminate and the finish will be similar in appearance to an oiled hardwood.
Why High-Pressure Laminate?
High-pressure laminate’s popularity has increased lately due to its lower cost and its ability to be nearly identical in appearance to several different materials such as solid wood, veneer, and even marble. In fact, it comes in hundreds of different colors and textures, making it the perfect cost-effective solution to any custom design or refinishing project. Its durability is another large factor in its popularity. High-pressure laminate has a lifespan of five to 15 years depending on the level of use and care. It’s a great option to use in both residential and commercial spaces.
How It’s Made
We won’t get too sciencey on you but the manufacturing of high-pressure laminate is pretty cool. It begins with the saturation of layers of kraft paper with a phenolic resin. The resin is a thermoset plastic which means it turns the liquid resin into hard plastic by a cross-linking bond process. After all the layers are saturated, a final layer of printed decor is laid on top and then fused together under incredible heat and pressure, more than 1,000 PSI. The thermosetting creates irreversible bonds and results in a rigid laminate sheet.
